Here is another weekend challenge for those students who want to earn TWO STARS!
Write your answer in your agenda on Monday, or put it on a sticky note/piece of paper.

Typing
As part of our IHES Writing initiative, students begin typing skills in grade 4 and continue in grade 5 & 6. Today students had their first lesson on a program called All The Right Type! Some students have already voiced that it is quite difficult to not 'pigeon peck'.

**Weekend Challenge**
To make learning fun and amp up our blog, I have decided to post a weekend challenge for students!
Multiplication
We have moved into our multiplication unit in math! By grades 4 and 5, students should have a good grasp of their facts and be ready to apply them to new strategies. If they do not know these basic facts, the new strategies and ideas can be tricky to learn! Extra practice is always a good idea, and the link below provides fun, interacting games for students to learn their basic facts! Have fun!

Refraction
Have you seen a mirage on the highway before? You think the pavement is wet, but it's really just light playing a trick on you! This week grade 4 students experimented with refraction and the ability for light to change direction! We learned how water and light can play tricks on us!
Call The Fire Department!!
Grade 5 students have learned the difference between a reversible change (physical change) and a non-reversible change (chemical change). Our experiment this week included a marshmallow, piece of paper and Popsicle stick! Students learned that when a chemical change occurs a new substance is formed, it emits an odour, produces a gas and its properties change!

Math Throughout the Day
Parents don't forget...
You can practice math many times throughout the day with your child! Here's an idea :)
Think about things that we cannot do without numbers. While sitting around the supper table, or driving to a hockey game, have a discussion with your child about the things that we could not do without numbers! Example: tell time, buy groceries, weighing yourself, baking cookies, playing a hockey game, etc.!
Geometry Inspiration
Students have been learning some mathematic skills and concepts in their most recent art activity. By using Piet Mondrian as our inspiration, students learned how to use a protractor to create lines that are perpendicular! I am so proud at the art they have created!
Transparent, Translucent, Opaque
Students were asked to bring examples of transparent, translucent and opaque items from home to showcase their learning of this new vocabulary. They were excited to share with the class and have learned a great deal about how light!
Here are some of our transparent items: glass, plastic, baggies and containers.
Here are some of our translucent items: scarves, grocery bags, cups, our finger and our shirt.
Here are some of our opaque items: an eraser, our body, agenda/book, wallet, stuffy, pin, puck, candle

Freezing Point
Today grade 5 students learned about the ways in which change of state occurs. We discussed ideas such as boiling point, melting point and freezing. Then we tested some every day liquids to see how they froze in comparison to one another. We were shocked to learn that shampoo freezes but oil does not!
Reflection with Periscopes and Kaleidoscopes
Today grade 4 students looked at light reflection and how it can be useful. Students learned about periscopes and kaleidoscopes and how mirrors are used to reflect light to make them work! Then we got to have a little fun of course!
